After completing my first semester as a MIM student, I started looking for opportunities to apply my knowledge in real world scenarios and landed an internship with Sprint Corporation, the fourth largest mobile network operator in the United States. Headquartered in Kansas City, KS, Sprint has an immensely huge and beautiful green campus to boast of and I was one of the lucky summer interns who got to experience it.
As an IT Systems Analyst in the Front Door Analytics and Reporting team, I witnessed the various technical issues and glitches that the sales representatives face in Sprint stores around the country and their impacts on the sales of the company. The data was overwhelming and creating automated reports that analyzed the trends of these issues and their subsequent resolution gave me more insights into the telecom industry in the United States of America. I worked with an amazing and experienced group of people and I am glad to have been a part of the team that gave me so much to learn. Apart from the multiple job responsibilities I had to perform, Sprint had also organized numerous social and fun events for the interns. From Ice cream socials to movie nights to a Town Hall with the CEO Marcelo Claure, this twelve-week internship was filled with exciting things that I could do. One of the best sessions was a workshop on understanding our personality and it was insightful for me to know more about myself. It is funny how there are things which one knows are true but never realizes about oneself until put in a situation to face it. Another memorable event was the trip to the NOC (Network Operation Center). The NOC is the place from where all the network administrators control and maintain the entire Sprint network. It is a heaven for computer and network engineers and I was intimidated by all the huge TV screens that highlighted the network over the entire United States of America. A place that works 24*7 and requires special access to enter, it was a mind-boggling experience to be in the cave that controls the mobile network which sits in the hands of everyone on the street.
Apart from the work, I also explored Kansas City and fell in love with the night life, the uncountable lakes, funky bars, and the mesmerizing downtown skyline. Filled with friendly and welcoming people, the city has a bucolic charm that one must experience to understand. To sum it up, I learnt a lot from this internship and it was the best summer I could have hoped for.
